Science

Mrs Golloway teaches all the middle school students science. However, Mrs. Pehanich will be going to science camp with them at Camp Hamilton in the spring.

Social Studies

Sixth grade Social Studies focuses on Ancient Civilizations. We will begin by studying the five themes of geography and how geography affects history. Our curriculum continues with the Old Stone Age, the New Stone Age, and the rise of civilizations. I am looking forward to studying Ancient Civilizations with your child and how cultures have interrelated throughout time.

Eight grade Social Studies focuses on Washington State History and US Government/ Civics. We will split the topics between the first trimester and the second and third. For the first trimester we will study Washington State History, and for the second and third we will study US Government and Civics.

English

We will focus on 6 traits writing which includes ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. We will focus on narrative writing, expository, and lastly persuasive writing. All of the assignments will have a rubric which will help students know exactly what is expected for the assignment. Throughout the year we will respond to different literature pieces we have read, both verbally and in writing.

Grammar and spelling will be a part of our English class. The expectation will be that studying for spelling happen at home.

AR

AR stands for Accelerated Reader and the students will be expected to regularly take quizzes on Accelerated Reader books. These books target each individual student's reading comprehension level. Points are awarded for each test based upon the difficulty level of the book, length of the book, and number of questions asked correctly. This is a great way for students to read books that are both on their level and that they find interesting. It is also an excellent way to improve in reading comprehension and skill.

Religion

The curriculum for 6th grade religion is the Old Testament; however, religion will be incorporated into our daily activities. Middle School will be having mass together every first Friday of the month.

Literature

All the 6th graders will stay in their homeroom this year for Literature. The class will both follow the textbook and will explore novels.
